Neldner Road (Formerly Powell and Son) Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023

$33.00

Another essay in how to marry shiraz horsepower with elegance and finesse from the masterful Dave Powell – and from a cooler season! With a dense purple-red colour, it unfolds briary layers of blackberries, blueberries, redcurrants and liqueur cherries with undertones of dark chocolate lifted by musky scents of spice and cracked pepper. Long and seamless, smooth and sumptuous, its plush core of dark plums and cherries knits with smoky mocha oak and a fine, drying spine of mineral tannins. Finishing with lingering notes of tar and fennel, baked earth and black licorice, it’s actually better on the third day of opening than the first. So it’s very good and will last the distance!

Winery

Neldner Road (Formerly Powell and Son)
Dave Powell, founder of Torbreck, has re-entered Australian wine, this time with his son, Callum at his side. Since 2014 the company has focused on high-quality sites across both the Eden Valley and Barossa Valley, retaining Dave Powell's dual focuses on Rhône Valley varieties as well as his well known intent to chase elegance, savoury finesse and structure. The new Powell & Son wines combine extraordinary depth of layered fruit, handsome oak and fine textures with the minerality and thoughtful composition associated with the finest wines of Dave Powell's previous existence. But Torbreck these wines are not – there's a distinctly different style here to what Torbreck became. I'm truly excited to get to know these compelling wines.
